The Descendants of Robert and Cecilia Stewart of Chamberbane, in Nova Scotia

Strathtummel and a snow-clad Schiehallion

In February 1786 Robert Stewart in Chamberbane married Cecilia Stewart in Milltown of Fincastle, parish of Dull, but the Old Parish records provide little information about their parentage.

January 28th 1786, Dull
Robert Stewart in the parish of Blair Atholl and Cecil Stewart in this parish gave up their names in order to marriage. Tax paid

1786, Blair Atholl
Robert Stewart in Chamberbane and Cecil Stewart in Millntown of Foncastle, Dull parish (married) 8th February.

Cecilia's parentage is unknown, but Robert was the third and youngest son of Alexander Stewart in Knockgarry who was Factor to John Stewart, 8th of Bonskeid. The evidence for this comes from a letter written by William Stewart in Westchester, Nova Scotia in 1886. On the left margin of the letter that he had written to his son, he said that "She (Cecilia Stewart, Robert Stewart's wife) did not like to live with her son Pat in Chamberbane, and she went to her nephew, my brother-in-law in Milton (of Borenich) for several years." As William's brother-in-law was James 'Ban' Stewart in Miltown of Borenich, then Cecilia must have been married to James 'Ban' Stewart's uncle, Robert Stewart,

Robert was born at Knockgarry, 8th June 1755, and probably moved to Chamberbane when his father died and Charles, the eldest son took over Knockgarry. His other brother, Patrick, probably moved to Balcastle at about the same time, and then moved to Balnaloin which eventually became Miltown of Borenich

Robert and Cecilia had nine known children.

1787 Blair Atholl
Robert Stewart in Chamberbane and Cecil Stewart his wife had a child born 3rd and baptised 7th March, named James.

1791 Blair Atholl
Robert Stewart in Chamberbane and Cecil Stewart his wife had a son born 1st and baptised 2nd October, named Robert.

Robert Stewart in Chamberbane foresaid and his wife had a son baptised 15th June 1789 named John.

1796 Blair Atholl
Robert Stewart in Chamberbane and Cecil Stewart his wife had a child baptised 27th November, named Donald.

1798 Blair Atholl
Cirsty, daughter to Robert Stewart and Cecil Stewart, Chamberbane, Strathtummel born 26th, baptised 29th December.

1801 Blair Atholl
Elispeth and Jean, lawful twins to Robert Stewart and Cecil Stewart, in Chamberbane, born 4th July and baptised 5th.

1804 Blair Atholl
Patrick lawful son to Peter (error?) Stewart and Cecil Stewart, spouse, in Chamberbane was born 5th April 1804 and baptised 10th.

No record of birth nor baptism has been found for their daughter Isobel Stewart who is thought to have been born between 1793 and 1794.

When David Stewart of Garth listed the Stewart families of Strathtummel in 1817, he included Cecil Stewart (widow) with her five sons and two daughters. Unfortunately no homestead names are provided on the list, but this is probably the Chamberbane family. If so, the twin daughters Elisabeth and Jean had died by 1817.

Cecilia emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1832, together with her eldest son James, the tailor, and her daughter Isobel, the wife of Thomas McLauchlan. Cecilia's second eldest son, 'Big John' was already living in Nova Scotia and he probably encouraged the rest of the family, and others from Borenich, to settle there. The group travelled to Oban, and took a ferry across to Tobermory, Isle of Mull, where the 120 ton brig 'Charlotte Kerr' was being repaired prior to departure. They left Scotland on 24th April 1832 and after an eventful voyage arrived at the Gut of Canso on 21st May. An interesting account of the voyage and passenger list of those in each party is available.

The "Presbyterian Witness" had the following death notice on Saturday April 15th, 1848. (Antigonish Co was formerly Sydney County).

STEWART, Cecilia died March 5th at Lochaber Lake, Sydney County, aged 89, native of Blair Athol, Perthshire, Scotland. Emigrated in 1833, has been a widow for 45 years.

This suggests that Cecilia Stewart was born around 1759 and that her husband Robert died around 1804, possibly even before the birth of his son Patrick. This might account for the error in the name of Patrick's father in the register of births.

The family of James Stewart and Margaret McLauchlan of Westchester, Nova Scotia

James, eldest son Robert and Cecilia, married Margaret McLauchlan, but the marriage does not seem to be entered in the Blair Atholl OPR.

James and Margaret McLauchlan had three sons born while they were living at Chamberbane where James was working as a tailor, but only the baptism of their eldest, Robert, is recorded in the Blair Atholl OPR.

1826 Blair Atholl
Robert, lawful son to James Stewart and Margaret McLauchlan in Chamberbane was born 5th January and baptised 10th.

Family records show that the other two sons born in Borenich were John on 12th May 1827 and Donald on 15th July 1830.

In 1832 the whole family emigrated to Nova Scotia and settled in Westchester where the rest of their family were born.

It is most likely that the family emigrated along with James 'Ban' Stewart and the Stewarts of Balcastle, as they also emigrated in 1832 and settled in Westchester, Nova Scotia.

The Marriage Bond for the Province of Nova Scotia dated August 4th 1863 shows that Robert Stewart of Westchester, Cumberland County, farmer, bachelor and Christie Stewart, spinster, obtained a licence directed to Rev. Thomas Downie at Antigonish, Antigonish County. John Stewart of Lochaber also signed the bond. Robert and Christie were married at the Presbyterian Church (now the United Church) in Antigonish on October 6th 1863. Robert was given as the son of James and Margaret Stewart, and although the bride's parents are not given, it is almost certain that they were Deacon Robert Stewart and Christie Stewart of Lochaber, two of the Balcastle Stewarts. As such the married couple would have been first cousins.

Details of the parents of Christie Stewart can be found in the Contents Index, under "Deacon Robert Stewart of North Lochaber, N.S. (1798-1873)"

Robert and Christie Stewart lived and farmed at Westchester Mountain, Cumberland County and appear with their family in the 1881 Canadian Census.

John, the second son of James Stewart and Margaret McLauchlan married Grace Ross.

The Ross family papers trace Grace's ancestors back to Alexander Ross of Tarbet, Ross-shire, who married Elizabeth Roy on the 27th May 1808. Their children were: Christie Ross (1809-1839); Donald Ross (1811-1864); John Ross (1813-1892); Janet Ross who was known as Jessie (1815-1900); Alexander Ross (1818-1900); Margaret Ross (1820-1865); Walter Roy Ross (1822-1862); and Elizabeth Ross who was born in 1825, but died in infancy.

On 8th February 1838 Grace's father John Ross had married Margaret Stewart, one of the Balcastle Stewarts who had settled at Westchester. John Ross and Margaret Stewart were farmers at Victoria, Cumberland County, and this is where Grace Ross was born.

Details of the parents of Grace Ross can be found in the Contents Index, under A. S. Ross's "Genealogical Record of the Loch Tummel Branch of the Clan Stewart (1712-1912)"

John and Grace Stewart farmed at Birchwood, Victoria Cross Road, Cumberland County and appear with their family in the 1881 Canadian Census.

Widow Margaret Stewart is Margaret McLauchlan, Peter's mother. The family was living with William C. Stewart who was the son of Alexander Stewart and Jane Renwick (widow Jane Stewart). William was one of the Balcastle Stewarts and married Martha G. Jackson on 31st January 1884. The identity of 15 year-old Donald Stewart is uncertain, but he is probably a relation. Peter Stewart and Isobella McLeod did not have any children.

Alexander, the fifth son of James Stewart and Margaret McLauchlan married Catherine McArthur on 23rd November 1869. Catherine was the daughter of John McArthur, farmer and miller, and his wife Nancy (Anne) Matheson. During the 1881 census they were living nearby at household 161. Prior to living in Victoria, the McArthur family had lived in Wilken's Grant, Pictou County, having immigrated from Scotland before 1850.

The year before his marriage Alexander purchased a farm in Victoria, next to the one owned by his brother Donald as shown in the 1881 census.

Margaret, the daughter of James Stewart and Margaret McLauchlan married Isaiah Singer on 15th February 1869. Previously he had been married to Girzel (Grace) Stewart, the daughter of John and Girzel Stewart of Balcastle, who died 12th July 1868. Grace Singer was buried beside her mother in the Stewart Cemetery, Westchester. Her memorial stone records her as "Grace, wife of Isiah Singer and daughter of the late John and Grizel Stewart died 12th July 1868, aged 56. A native of Scotland". The stone is partially broken.

Margaret and Isaiah Singer had a small farm in Westchester with Robert and Christie Stewart on one side, and the farm of William C. Stewart on the other side. So they were living next to Jane Stewart (Renwick) and Margaret's mother, Margaret McLauchlan. By the time of the 1881 census, all of their children had been born.

The family of 'Big' John Stewart and Ann MacDonald in Lochaber, Nova Scotia

'Big' John, the second son Robert and Cecilia Stewart of Chamberbane, emigrated to Canada in 1818. He settled in the Lochaber district of Nova Scotia where he met Ann MacDonald, and married her on 15th February 1821.

Ann MacDonald was the daughter of Ewan (Hugh) MacDonald and Christina Williamson. The family are listed in "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation" by Donald Whyte (entry 5601) with a reference to "A History of the County of Antigonish, Nova Scotia" by Rev D.J. Rankin, Toronto, 1929. In error, Ewan's wife is given as Mary Williams instead of Christina Williamson.

Ewen MacDonald and Christain Williamson were probably married in the town of Inverness, as their daughter Mary was christened there 18th December 1790. They must have moved to Urquhart, just west of Inverness, soon afterwards as their next five children were born there. The Old Parish Record lists the christenings of the children of Evan McDonald and Christian Williamson as: Kenneth, 30th September 1792; Ann, 13th December 1794; Catherine, 15th January 1797; John, 22nd March 1799; and Alexander, 11th July 1801.

The whole family emigrated to Gaspereaux Lake, Lochaber, Nova Scotia in 1803. Their son Donald was born in 1804. The date of birth for their daughter Christine is unknown, but she is said to have been born in Scotland before they emigrated. Ewan died around 1806 after which the family moved to Lochaber.

'Big' John's son Robert married Barbara 'Harry' Stewart and settled in South Lochaber where they had three children: John R, born 1851; Robert, born 1853; and Annie (Barbara Ann), born 1854. Robert died in 1855 and Barbara later married James Malloy. There is a memorial stone to Barbara Stewart Malloy (1828 - 1867) in the South Lochaber cemetery.

Barbara was the daughter of John 'Harry' Stewart and Margaret Robertson who were originally from Borenich, and had married on 6th November 1825.

John 'Harry' Stewart and his family emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1833 on the same ship as the Balcastle Stewarts, and there is a reference to this event in the “History of Nova Scotia” by David Allison, Halifax 1916 (volume 3, page 681).

Alexander's widowed mother, Mary Cameron aged 99 years, and his two brothers Martin aged 70 years and Duncan aged 60 years had the farm next to them. All had been born in Scotland.

Alexander's parents, Samuel Cameron and Mary Cameron, were married on 5th February 1811 at Ratalich, Kilmonivaig, just to the north of Fort William in Lochaber, Scotland. Martin Cameron was christened at Ratalich on the 2nd June 1812. Alexander was christened at the same place on 30th August 1814. His younger brother Duncan was christened 30th December 1819 at Garrigholash.

There are three memorial stones in the North Lochaber cemetery relating to these Camerons. "Duncan Cameron of Glen Alpine, Antigonish County died April 19th 1898 aged 77 years". "Martin Cameron of Glen Alpine, Antigonish County died August 8th 1888, aged 77 years". "Mary Cameron, wife of Samuel Cameron. Born at Lochaber, Scotland in the year of 1780. Died at Lochaber, Nova Scotia March 3rd 1884, aged 104 years".

Mary Stewart died in 1894 and her memorial stone in the North Lochaber cemetery reads "Mary Stewart died June 15th 1894, aged 67 years and 10 months, wife of Alexander Cameron. Samuel their son drowned in Washington June 28th 1882, aged 31 years and 6 months".

Her four sons are also listed: Archibald, aged 34, is a bridge builder; Niel, aged 30 and Donald, aged 26, are miners; and John, aged 24, is a farmer.

The Family of Isobel Stewart in Chamberbane, Borenich and Nova Scotia

In 1833, the year after James Stewart and his family had emigrated to Nova Scotia, his mother Cecilia and the rest of the Chamberbane Stewarts left Borenich to join them. It is certain that Cecilia's remaining two daughters, Isobel and Christy were with her, together with their families. It is probable that her three remaining sons; Robert, Donald and Patrick also emigrated with them in 1833, as they do not appear in the 1841 census for Borenich, and there are no more marriages at Chamberbane linked to this family.

Isobel Stewart had married Thomas McLauchlan before they emigrated. Family tradition claimed that he was the son of Thomas McLauchlan and Margaret Murphy, but the surname of Murphy is virtually unknown in this part of Perthshire. The registration of Thomas's death shows that his parents actually were John MacLauchlan and Elizabeth (Elspet) Reid.

The couple probably had four children before they emigrated, Elizabeth, Cecilia, Isobel and John.

James Stobie's map of Perthshire (1783) shows Newtown as being situated between Carrick and Achastle, at the top of Glen Fincastle. John Thomson's map (1827) copies Stobie's work but subsequent maps do not identify Newtown. John Waterston's 'Reduced Plan of the Estates of Fincastle (Borenich), Lick and Duntaulich' (1832) names the farm in this area as Uchtavrittie. Finally, the Dundee College of Education publication 'Glen Fincastle 1841-1901: A Study of a Perthshire Glen' (1969), names the farm as Uchdabhriedy linking it to a nearby limestone ridge called Creag Bhridean. The ruins, which were deserted at the time of the 1841 census, show only the remains of grass-covered foundations for a house (22m x 4m) internally divided (6m, 10m, 6m), and two farm buildings (7m x 4m). Map reference NN 857631.

The ruins of Balnafeat (Balnavid in James Stobie's map) are further down Glen Fincastle, on the east side of the river between Dundavie and Pitfeolan. In 1841 there was only one house being occupied by nine people, including a handloom weaver and a mantle-maker. The remains indicate that originally there were two houses and three outhouses, one with an extension, in addition to a well and a small lime-kiln. There were a large number of MacLauchlanes living in Glen Fincastle at the same time as Thomas and his wife. Some of these are almost certain to be related.

The 1881 Canadian census suggest that Thomas was the first of the children to be born in Nova Scotia, in 1833. Thomas McLauchlan, senior, died 15th May 1866, and his wife Isobel Stewart died 21st November 1875.

The death of Thomas McLachlan was registered by his son Thomas (entry 174) and says that he was 79 years old, married, and was born in Perthshire, Scotland. It gives his parents as John McLachlan, farmer, and Elizabeth Reid. Died of old age, 6th May 1866. (John McLauchlan and Elspet Reid, married 5th December 1783, Dull OPR)

The Emigration of 'Deacon' Robert Stewart and his wife Christy Stewart in Balcastle and Lochaber, Nova Scotia

Cecilia Stewart's daughter Christy married 'Deacon' Robert Stewart of Balcastle on 6th May 1827 in Borenich. Three children were born to them while they were living at Balcastle (Robert, Janet and John).

In 1833 the family emigrated to Canada along with his brother Donald's family, widow Cecilia Stewart, and Thomas McLauchlan's family. The first wave of Stewarts, at least twenty two people, had emigrated the previous year and settled in Lochaber and Westchester. This second wave of another fifteen people went to join those who were already established in Nova Scotia. Widow Cecilia Stewart of Chamberbane went with them, but old Robert Stewart of Balcastle remained behind with the last of his sons, John 'Bonnety' Stewart.

'Deacon' Robert Stewart and his family settled in Lochaber, where another three children (Cecilia in 1833, Donald in 1836, and Christie in 1839) were born.

Much fuller details of this family are given in 'Deacon' Robert Stewart of North Lochaber, N.S. (1798-1873)
